Notes
Tombstone is inscribed, 'David H. Davis, husband of Louisa C. Davis.' Buried next to Samuel James Davis. According to Lamar County Marriage Records he married Louisa C. Miller.
Information from Barbara Ferrell, 10 Jun 1997, 1209 Carter Grove Rd., Hazel Green, AL, 35750-9035: D. H. Davis was a Texas Senator for Lamar County Aug 1866. He was the son of Dr. John Davis.
From BACKWARD GLANCES, by A. W. Neville, Edited by Skipper Steely, The Wright Press, Paris, TX, Vol. I, p. 50-52: '... May 19, 1862, the [Commissioners] court ordered levy of a war tax of 10 cents on the $100 for support of the destitute families of the men who 'are or may be enlisted in the service of the army or navy of this state or the Confederate States of America.' To ascertain the needs of such families the court appointed a person in each precinct....' D. H. Davis was appointed for Precinct 8... 'D. H. Davis of Precinct 8 reported that he had received from the treasurer for relief of soldiers families the sum of $40, of which he had expended $22.56 to August 17.'
