His two brothers, Sterling and Valentine, did not return home from the war. Sterling was killed in battle and Vol apparently died of illness during the war. Five of Dan's younger brothers and sisters contracted tuberculosis from him and died unmarried a few years following the war. Only three of the eleven children of Pinckney and Leodicia Cardin Huff survived the effects of the war. These were Sarah Elizabeth Huff Skidmore Huff, Mary Ann Huff Roland, and George W. Huff.

He died on July 21, 1865 at the home of his parents in Blossom Prairie, Lamar County, Texas. He was buried in the Old Roland Cemetery, (sometimes referred to as the Huff Cemetery) between Sylvan and Pattonville. A tombstone marks the site of his burial and gives the birth and date dates.
