Jesse Columbus Garrett was born in Tennessee on 19 Jun 1840 and died 5 Apr 1919. He served in the Texas Rangers and also in the Confederate Amy.
Believing in State's Rights, but not in slavery, he joined Company K, 9th Texas Cavalry, CSA and was elected 1st Lieutenant. He served under Lawrence Sulivan Ross in the famous Ross's Texas Brigade. While in this service he was loaned to General Nathan Bedford Forrest as a scout and it is said he was able to get in to Gen. W. T. Sherman's camp from time to time to gather information. He had been captured at Vicksburg but escaped and later was presented a sword taken from Col Streight by Gen. Forrest who told him, "I've been looking for a man to give this to; and you re the best one." During the war Jesse was wounded twelve times, nine times by the gun and three times by the saber.
He married a cousin, Elizabeth Jane Garrett 28 Mar 1865 in Hopkins County, Texas. Elizabeth was born in Arkansas on 31 Oct 1842 and died 21 May 1931.

8. Sarah Katherine Garrett, born17 Jun 1877, died 7 Oct 1918
9. Charles David Garrett, born 12 Jun 1879, died 7 Oct 1879
10. Emma Ludella Garrett, born 12 Oct 1880, died unknown
11. Lawrence Sullivan Ross Garrett, born 30 Dec 1885, died 21 Sep 1968
Jesse and his wife were members of the Primitive Baptist church in Hopkins County.
