Alfred Harrison Flanagan, was born on October 13, 1838 in Alabama, the son of Seaborne Flanagan and Sarah Hardy Flanagan. He was a Private in Company H, 3rd Texas Cavalry. During his service there is no record of him being wounded but he was captured and made a prisoner of war.
He enlisted June 13, 1861, to serve 12 months. On the roll of the company dated June 3, 1864, last roll on file. He is reported absent, "Left in Alabama with a lame horse, under Captain Ward."
He served until surrender in 1865, minus the short period he was a POW. He was taken as a POW on March 3, 1863 at Tuscumba, Alabama and transported to Military Prison in Alton, Illinois, received there on March 12, 1863. At the time of his capture he was 25 years old; Height: 5'9"; Eyes: Gray; Hair: Sandy; Fair complexion. He was exchanged April 1, 1863.

Flanagan not in picture. She died at
age 27 and was probably already
deceased at the time the picture was
taken. Allie is the only child of
Alfred by his first wife Jane White.
Alfred was married three times: to Jane White, Margaret E. Kirkpatrick, and Laura M. Cook (Flower, Walker, Armsworthy).
Jane White was born about 1845, in Tennessee. They married about 1861 and she died about 1867 possibly in Yantis, Sulphur Springs or Quitman, Texas. Her grave has not been found. The only child of Jane White and Alfred Flanagan was Mary Alford Flanagan (my great-grandmother.) Mary Alford (Allie) Flanagan was born July 19, 1863, Wood County, Texas, married: Daniel Tull Wright July 13, 1884, Hopkins County, Texas, died August 25, 1890, buried Union Cemetery next to her stepmother Margaret Kirkpatrick Flanagan. Margaret and Allie have a double monument. Alfred is buried the next plot over from the two women. Allie was about three years old before she saw her father for the first time due to the war. Allie (like her mother) died in her 20's leaving behind a two year old daughter and a four month old baby boy.
Alfred Flanagan and Margaret Kirkpatrick married after 1867. Their children were:
1. William David (Dave) Flanagan, born 24 Nov 1871, married Lillie Webster, December 6, 1897 in Wood County, Texas.
2. Lernora (Nora) C. Flanagan, born 1874, married Dr. Charlie L. Smith, December 14, 1896 in Wood County, Texas.
3. John Seaborne (Seab) Flanagan, born 1875, married Inez Gambling.
4. Margaret Ovelia Flanagan, born 3 Jul 1877 married Oscar Bryant.
5. Alfred Vanburen Flanagan, born 11 Apr 1879 married Dessia Cook.
Margaret Kirkpatrick was born 16 Apr 1839 and died 28 Apr 1898 and was buried at Union Cemetery in Hopkins County.
The grave of Laura M. Cook Flanagan has not been located.
I am uncertain at what age Alfred's parents came to Texas. Alfred was a farmer and lived in Wood and Titus counties of Texas.
He received a Texas Confederate Pension #11703 registered in the Wood County, Texas.
Alfred died April 20, 1920, at age 82 of "Heart Failure" at his home in Mt. Pleasant, Titus County, Texas, survived by his third wife. He is buried in Union Cemetery, Hopkins County, between the cities of Sulphur Springs and Yantis, Texas.
