Hale Cemetery, Lamar County, Texas
LOCATION: This cemetery is actually one marker in a pasture in Martin Community, southwest of Deport. This would be in Block 59 of the Lamar County Road Map produced by American Drafting and Services revised December 1993.
DIRECTIONS: The tombstone is near the trunk of an old cedar tree. He was the great-great grandfather of Barbara Martin of Paris.
GPS COORDINATES: GPS coordinates are not known.
OLDEST KNOWN BURIAL: The oldest known grave is that of David M. Nicholson who died 14 Oct 1871.
NUMBER OF GRAVES: There are 2 known graves in the cemetery. (July 2017)
SIGNS/MARKERS: There is not a state highway marker for the cemetery.
LAST ENUMERATION: Elizabeth Booth recorded this cemetery in July 1972.
ADD'L INFORMATION: From the records of Elizabeth Booth: 'This burial ground, once known as Hale Cemetery, has been destroyed with the exception of one tomb that remains standing. It marks the grave of M. D. Nicholson. The land now (July 1972) belongs to Mr. Walter Allen, but the cemetery was destroyed before Mr. Allen came into possession of it. Several of the older members of the Jeffers family were buried here as were several members of the Hale family--probably Benjamin G. Hale who married Miss M. A. Jeffers on 17 Sep 1845. D. M. Nicholson had a headright survey of 320 acres 16 1/2 miles south and 35 degrees east of Paris, Texas. In the 1854-55 school census of Lamar County, Texas, B. G. Hale had 1 child in school district 28; D. M. Nicholson had 3 children in School District 27. 1860 census of Lamar County, Texas, Precinct 1, Family 291 - B. G. Hale, 48, farmer, m, TN; M. A., 37, f, AL; J. M., 14, m, TX; J. J., 11, m, TX; S. Jeffers, 70, m, NC; J. Jeffers, 71, f, SC; W. E. Felley, 27, m, TN, a clerk. M. D. Nicholson was not located on the 1860 census, but found David Nicholson in 1850 Lamar County, Texas, census, family #20 - David Nicholson, 28, m, AL; Louisa, 24, f, MO; Samuel, 7, m, TX; John, 5, m, TX; Mary, 2, f, TX.'

The following persons are known or believed to be buried here: Capt. Andrew J. Nicholson (birth and death are not known), David M. Nicholson 2 Jan 1822 - 14 Oct 1871 and Samuel Fulton Nicholson 1830 - 5 Jun 1888.
