Compton Cemetery, Lamar County, Texas
LOCATION: Compton Cemetery is located near Roxton in the southwest quadrant of the county. It would be probably south of County Road #25150 somewhere in Block 54 of the Lamar County Road Map produced by American Drafting and Services revised December 1993.
DIRECTIONS: There are no road directions in the notes of Mrs. Booth except that it was located by O. T. Oats of Roxton.
GPS COORDINATES: Not known.
OLDEST KNOWN BURIAL: The oldest inscribed grave is that of John G. Perrin who died 12 Aug 1850.
NUMBER OF GRAVES: There are 38 identified graves in the cemetery. (July 2017)
SIGNS/MARKERS: There is not a sign for the cemetery.
LAST ENUMERATION: Elizabeth Booth recorded the cemetery on 30 Jan 1971.
ADD'L INFORMATION: Lamar County Deed Book E., p. 327: 'Know all men... that Thos. Compton of said county and state do hereby grant... unto Thos. M. Kimble... in consideration of the sum of three dollars... on the waters of North Sulphur about one mile north of said Sulphur, said lot of land a portion of the headright survey of Joseph Kimble deceased, to begin at a small hickory, 135 steps north of the south boundary of said Joseph Kimble Headright now owned by Thos. Compton- thence north, thence west thence south, thence east to the beginning so as to include one acre of land in a square where the graveyard is situated on the said lot of land, to have and to hold... signed Thos. Compton, 1 Feb 1857.'
