| Notes THE PARIS NEWS, Thursday, September 14, 1961, p. 1, 4: “Lamar Crash Fatal to One. A midnight traffic accident about two miles southeast of Paris on Farm Road 1507 claimed the life of Loyd Levell Blaine of Brookston. According to Highway Patrolman James Wray, Blaine was driving east and failed to negotiate a curve. The auto left the road and overturned in a small creek bed. Blaine was pinned under the car, and was pronounced dead on arrival at Lamar Medical Center. According to Wray, Blaine was apparently killed instantly in the Wednesday midnight crash. Riding with Blaine was Roy Weaver of Roxton, who was reported to be in a slight shock Thursday morning. Blaine’s survivors are his wife, Vermell Yates Blaine, his mother, and a sister, Mrs. Elbert Tidwell, both of Reno, and nine children. He was Lamar County’s sixth traffic fatality of the year. Funeral arrangements were pending at Gene Roden and Sons Funeral Home. City policemen investigated their share of accidents Wednesday. The first occurred at 2:15 a.m. in the 1100 block of East Grove Street. An auto driven by Donald Houston Holmes, 2600 Pine Bluff, was driving east on Grove and hit a car parked at 1137 East Grove owned by S. L. Nichols of that address, said officers. Holmes’ car was damaged to the tune of $400, and the parked car was damaged also. No one was hospitalized. Then at 8:15 a.m. at Cedar and 24th SE Streets a car driven by James Larry Atwood, 349-12th NW collided with a car driven by Gladys Taylor Heavner, 2320 College, according to police. Atwood’s car received S100 damage and the Heavner car received $75 damage. The next accident of the day was a car-pedestrian incident. Charles Merritt, the pedestrian, 16, 3581-16th NW, was taken to St. Joseph’s hospital where he was reported to be resting well this morning. Police reports state Merritt darted from between parked cars into traffic and was struck by a car driven by Homer Dabney Blaine, Sr., 235 Atkins Ave., Shreveport, La. Blaine was going south on North Main near Pine Bluff Street and was unable to avoid hitting the youth, said police. Blaine’s auto received S125 damage in the accident. Then about 3 p.m. Wednesday an accident occurred at the intersection of North Main and Loop 286. A Model A Ford driven by Edgar Otis Rushing. 640 North Main Street, traveling north, was attempting a left turn onto Loop 286 when it, was struck by an auto driven by Butler Thomas Pipkin, Antlers, Okla., who was going south, said investigating officer Sergeant Dabney Hodges. The Model A overturned and Rushing’s wife suffered facial cuts and bruise. She was taken to Lamar Medical Center where she was reported doing fine this morning. Damage to Pipkin’s car was estimated at $150 and the old model Ford was considered a total loss. About 12:30 a.m. Thursday, an auto driven by Marvin Lee Townsend, 2401 Lamar Avenue struck a parked truck-tractor at 1028 Lamar Avenue. No one was hospitalized, but damage to both vehicles was high. The truck, owned by Jack Fry, of Paris, received damage to the rear axle and springs. Townsend’s car received $700 damage, said police. — DALE JOHNSON.” Information from Texas Death Certificate: |
