Notes

THE PARIS NEWS, Monday, October 31, 1960, p. 1-2: “NEGRO SHOT TO DEATH, ANOTHER CHARGED HERE. A cafe argument left one Paris Negro fatally shot in the head here Sunday afternoon and a second Negro man has been charged with murder. John Tarver, about 28, was apparently killed instantly by one of the two shots fired in Boone’s Cafe on Tudor Street as he sat at a counter. In jail, and charged with the murder, is Fred Jackson. Witnesses say the shooting followed an argument earlier in the day between Jackson and a waitress, Christene Baldwin. According to a police report, Jackson returned to the cafe after the argument armed with a .9 millimeter pistol. One shot was fired across the counter apparently at the waitress, but she ducked and the shot missed her. The report showed that Jackson then wheeled at Tarver seated at the counter and shot. The bullet struck Tarver of his right eye and penetrated his head coming out over his left ear. When Paris police arrived on the scene shortly after 1 p.m. Jackson was standing outside the establishment. He surrendered to police saying he shot Tarver. Tarver was found slumped over the counter in a large pool of blood, apparently dead. He was rushed to Lamar Medical Center, but was pronounced dead on arrival. Two empty cartridges were found by police. One slug struck in the music box. William Maxey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements for Tarver’s funeral. He lived at 842-4th NE. He leaves his wife, Jo Ann; three children, Juanita Joyce, Dorothy Jean and Sharon Denise, besides his father, Eli Tarver, Locust Grove, Okla.; and these sisters and brothers: Miss Margaret Taver, Mrs. Thelma McGuire, Mrs. Hattie Crawford, Willie Clifton Tarver, Alonzo Tarver, all of Tulsa, Okla.; Mrs. Albert Hall, Mrs. Flora Ingrin and John Paul Tarver, Oklahoma City, and Mrs. Ora Parker, Waggoner, Okla. In addition to the shooting investigation the Paris Police Department along with the Sheriff’s Department investigated burglary at Weiler Air Conditions Company at 136 West Price. A report showed that the burglars entered through a west window. Missing was a total of $26 in change from a change box and a soft drink machine. The burglary was reported to police at 11 a.m. Sunday by Owner S. L. Weiler, No trace has been found of a 1953 Chevrolet stolen on Lamar Avenue over the weekend. The owner, Mickey Flippen, 510-13th NW, said the car was stolen from the Two-Kiss Drive-in on Lamar Avenue. Police arrested eight persons for drunkenness over the weekend and investigated a minor accident in the 800 block of Lamar Avenue Saturday morning.”
