Notes
THE PARIS NEWS, Wednesday, January 3, 2018: Matthew Kyle Bawcum, 24, passed from this life on Dec. 26, 2017, at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He was born in Paris, Texas, on March 15, 1993. Kyle attended schools in Paris and Southeast Oklahoma and graduated from Paris High School in 2011. He was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church where he was baptized and confirmed in his faith. After high school, he attended college at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma. Following college, in January of 2014, Kyle enlisted in the United States Army. He honorably served his country for four years which included two tours of duty, one in Turkey and a second in Iraq. He was currently stationed at Fort Campbell. One of Kyle’s greatest qualities was his compassion for others. His humility and quiet acts of kindness touched the hearts of many people. He was particularly encouraging to those who faced challenges and was concerned whenever people were left out. Kyle was philosophical and often pondered the inequities in our world. He was not driven by the desire to acquire worldly things, but rather to be kind to people from all walks of life. He always seemed to look after ‘the little guy.’ Because of this, Kyle had a variety of friends from many backgrounds, several of whom were extremely loyal to him. Kyle was an excellent athlete. During his junior and senior years, he earned consecutive first-place finishes at the Texas High School State Power Lifting Meet and broke a state record in the process. He also earned the title of Most Outstanding Power Lifter and qualified for a world meet. In addition to power lifting, Kyle enjoyed many other sports and games including tennis, golf, basketball, football, wrestling, chess, pool and ping-pong. In whatever he did, Kyle was a determined competitor and enjoyed many-a-game with his dad, brothers, cousins, uncles, and friends. Kyle was a loving son, brother, grandson, nephew and cousin. He was especially proud of his brothers, Chandler, Ethan and Turner, and always wanted more and better for them than for himself. Kyle was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Gerald Bawcum and Robert ‘Bob’ Shufeldt and his uncle, Scott Shufeldt. He was loved deeply and will be missed by all who survive him which include his mother, Dawn Long and husband, Robert; brothers. Ethan and Turner West; his father, Matthew Bawcum and wife, LeAnna, brother, Chandler Bawcum; grandmother, Judy Bawcum; grandparents, Joan and Rickey Lucas; grandfather, Dan Malone; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and special friends. His former sergeant, Nick Lucas, sent his father a message saying, ‘My hopes are that Kyle’s loved ones can find peace in knowing that so many people here loved and cared for Kyle like he was their own.’ A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church with Father Denzil Vithanage as celebrant. A Rosary and time of visitation will be held at the church on Thursday beginning at 7 p.m. Fry & Gibbs Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in Kyle’s honor to: New Hope Center of Paris, 400 4th St. S.W.; The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, 3300 Clarksville St.; or the Children’s Advocacy Center, 711 Pine Bluff St., all in Paris, Texas, 75460.
