THE PARIS NEWS, Thursday, June 15, 1944, p. 1: “LAREN LEE BALLEW DIES FROM INJURIES. Falls Under Wheels of Heavy Logging Truck Near Bagwell. Laren Lee Ballew, Camp Maxey employe, died at 10:55 p.m. Wednesday at Lamar Hospital where he was brought after falling under the wheels of a heavy logging truck, not far from his home, four miles north of Bagwell, Red River County. According to report by his companions, he was riding on the back of the truck, on which was loaded a set of trailer wheels, when the accident occurred, about a quarter of a mile north of Bagwell, as he was on his way home after work hours between 7 and 8 p.m. The chain holding the trailer became loosened and is believed to have struck his head, so that he fell from the truck and under the wheels. His skull and both legs and arms were fractured, examination showed at the hospital where he was brought by ambulance about 10:30 p.m. He was about 50 years old, and was employed at the camp as a drag line operator. Funeral arrangement were incomplete Thursday morning, according to N. E. Mikel of Clarksville Funeral Home at Clarksville which has charge, but services will be held probably Friday afternoon at or near Bagwell. The time depends on word from relatives out of town.”
