THE PARIS NEWS, Friday, September 1, 1944, p. 1, 5: “ACCIDENT VICTIM DIES THURSDAY. Mrs. C. E. Bentley Of Detroit Suffers Fatal Skull Fracture. Mrs. C. E. Bentley of Detroit, 41 died at 9:10 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph’s Hospital where she was brought after a traffic accident Monday night. She was unconscious, and examination later showed she had suffer a skull fracture. Funeral service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Baptist Church at Detroit, the Rev. T. W. Mathis officiating, and Brown Roden Funeral Home making interment in Detroit Cemetery. Robert Pierce, Arthur Bivens, Odie Elliston, Willard Hudson, Ed Jones and Bud Dollins will be pallbearers. Mrs. Bentley, the former Miss Mary Jo Roberts, was the daughter of Joe Lee Roberts now of Paris. She leaves, besides her husband and father, one brother Hassell Roberts of Detroit. No official report on the accident was available Friday morning from Paris city police, and none had been made to Lamar or Red River County officials. Mrs. Bentley, her husband and Frank Norris, all of Detroit, were admitted to the hospital about 8:20 p.m. Monday, the two men remaining there overnight after having first aid treatment for cuts and bruises. The accident occurred east of Detroit, and not near Deport as was first reported, and a traveling man passing by brought the injured three to the hospital here, according to unofficial accounts. The automobile in which they were riding is said to have struck a butane gas truck parked without lights on the side of the highway. Two Negroes injured in the crash were reported treated by a physician at Detroit.”
