Notes

THE PARIS NEWS, Wednesday, Apr. 19, 2017, page 3: “Ruby Lavelle Whitlock Bennett, known by her grandchildren as ‘Meme,’ passed away peacefully, on April 17, 2017, at Paris Regional Medical Center after a short illness. She was born July 15, 1929, a few miles south of Paris, to Ruby Fults Whitlock and Edgar Whitlock, who was a farmer during the Great Depression. She graduated from Paris High School in 1947 and began working as a telephone operator at the age of 18 at Southwestern Bell in Paris, where she worked for several years. In 1956, she worked as a bank teller in Dallas, but returned a few years later to the job that she was passionate about, as a telephone operator in Commerce, Texas. In 1962, she married G.W. Bennett and assisted as owner/operator of Bennett’s Cleaners until their retirement in the mid-90s. She enjoyed cruising the country side with her husband, listening to country music, playing dominos and was a great conversationalist. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a granddaughter, Christina Elayne Balfour. She is survived by an only daughter, Shelia Elayne Balfour and husband Ron; grandson, Chad Balfour and wife, Jamie; and great-granddaughter, Kennady Pryor of Greenville, Texas; only sister Virginia Jo Holmes and husband, Renford, of Paris; nieces, Dr. Amanda Holmes of Paris and Jeniffer Holmes Wilkes of Pittsburg, Texas; and nephew, Dr. Rafe Holmes of Boise, Idaho. The family will have visitation Thursday night from 6-8 p.m., at Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home in Paris. Services will be held at 2 p.m., on Friday, April 21, 2017, at Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Long Cemetery in Powderly, Texas. Online condolences may be sent to the Bennett family at fry-gibbs.com.” Submitted by Mary J. Tallant.
