Information from Funeral Home: “Van M. Barton, 97, of Paris, passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at Paris Regional Medical Center. Services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 17th, at Bright-Holland Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Fortenberry officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Meadowbrook Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Mr. Barton, the son of Ollie Jefferson & Lou Ada Morris Barton, was born Sept. 20, 1919, in Bogata. He grew up in the Marvin / Jennings Community and graduated from Jennings School in 1938. He served our country with the Army Air Corp during World War II. Van spent time in the Galapagos Islands and was qualified as a sharp shooter prior to being honorably discharged on February 2, 1946. He worked a number of years at National Hardware before beginning a career with Red Ball Motor Freight. He began that career here in Paris and then moved to Dallas where he retired. Following his retirement he returned to Paris. He was very active in a Blue Grass band and was known as one of the best Dobro players in northeast Texas. Van was a member of East Paris Baptist Church. His wife, Joyce Barton, preceded him in death on Jan. 2, 1998, following fifty-one years of building family and memories. He was also preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Calvin Barton and two sisters, Maurine Middleton and Jackie Marie Lewis. Survivors include three children, Marshall Barton & wife Nancy of Kemp, Mike Barton & wife Debbie of Midlothian and Sheila Barton of Sioux Falls, SD, grandchildren, Kyle Barton, Marshall Wayne Barton, Michael Barton, Dee Dee Goble, Daniel Barton, Jason Moreno, Sylvester Bryant and Vanessa Bryant, eighteen great grandchildren, two sisters, Catherine Barton Weaver and Martha Barton Fox both of Paris along with several nieces & nephews and a host of friends. Casket bearers will be: Kyle Barton, Michael Barton, Daniel Barton, Jason Moreno and Michael Barton, Jr.” Submitted by Mary J. Tallant.
