THE PARIS NEWS, Sunday, March 6, 2016: "Graveside services for George Michael 'Mike' Barbee, 71 of Paris, Texas, are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Monday in the Evergreen Cemetery Pavilion in Paris with the Rev. Ed Dodd officiating. Services are under the direction of Caudle-Rutledge-Daugherty Funeral Home in Lindale, Texas. Mike died Thursday, March 3, 2016, in a Paris hospital. He was born January 16, 1945, in Paris, Texas, to the late E. E. 'Sonny' and Katheryne 'Katie' Lucille Patrick Barbee. He was a Paris High School graduate in 1963 and attended Paris Junior College and East Texas State University. Mike married Sarah Louise Osborne on June 28, 1974. He served in the Texas National Guard and the Army Reserves and was a volunteer member of the Paris Fire Department Auxiliary. Mike retired from Superior Switch Board and was a longtime member of Kiwanis Club of Paris. Mike was very involved in Paris Kiwanis Soccer Association and a huge supporter of PJC Dragon Basketball. He was a member of the East Texas Historical Fire Society, Lamar County Historical Society, Lamar County Genealogy Society and First United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Pat Barbee; a very special aunt, Helen Barbee; beloved mother-in-law Loys Scott Osborne; and sisters-in-law, Hazel Sparks and Betty Ayers. Mike is survived by his wife of 41 years, Sarah Louise Osborne Barbee of Paris; four children, Christopher Scott Barbee of California, Matthew Reid Barbee of Paris, Michelle Barbee Johnson and husband, Mark Allen Jr., of Paris, and Michael Hull Barbee and wife, Sandy, of Paris; two grandchildren, James Allen Johnson and Nada Renee Barbee, both of Paris; sister-in-law, LeAnn Starnes Barbee of Paris; nieces and nephews, Erin Elizabeth Barbee of Addison, Ethan Patrick Barbee and wife, Caroline, of Raleigh, North Carolina, Caitlin Rae Barbee of Paris, Stephen Louis Sparks and wife, Karon, of Paris, Craig Lee Sparks of Paris, Stacy Chick and husband, Bill, of Princeton, New Jersey, Melissa Tyson and husband, Russell, of Alabama and Kim Hoffman of Georgia; cousins, B. Hull Barbee Jr. and wife, Delisa, Linda Kirk and husband, Kenneth, and Katie Ann Halwes and husband, Dennis, and Jimmy Crouch and wife, Marty; and numerous extended family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be John Chiles, John Fuston, Marcus L. Roden, Bob Burns, B. Hull Barbee Jr., Larry Carney, Kenneth Kirk, Stephen Sparks and Jerry Thrasher. The Barbee family will receive friends prior to the graveside service Monday from 1-2 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery Pavilion. If memorials are desired, the family would like to suggest a few of Mike’s favorites: the Lamar County Historical Society, the Lamar County Genealogy Society, the Red River Valley Veterans Memorial, the Faught Volunteer Fire Department, the Reno Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department or any volunteer fire department. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the doctors and nurses who cared for Mike during his illness."
