THE PARIS NEWS, Tuesday, June 25, 2013: “Tommie Lou Slagle Ballard, 77, of Powderly, passed away Friday, June 21, 2013, at her residence with her husband, Edwin Dawson Ballard, daughter-in-law, Tena Ballard, and her nurse, Rachel Wood by her side. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 27, at Bright-Holland Funeral Home with Minister Ryan Ballard officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. on Wednesday, at the funeral home. Tommie was born Aug. 7, 1935, in Chicota, to James Austin ‘Tom’ and Nannie Lou Duke Slagle. Her happiest years were spent playing T.A.A.F. Volleyball and participating in archery shoots. Tommie became a Christian at an early age and attended Baptist churches in Chicota and Garretts Bluff, and in 1953, she became a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Clardy and remained a member there the rest of her life. She pursued rock and arrow head hunting as well as trail walking and animal and bird observation. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Emma Dean Maberry; and brothers, James A. Slagle and Ralph Slagle. Survivors include her husband, Edwin Dawson Ballard; two sons, Edwin Kirk Ballard and wife, Beverly, of Paris and Kriss Ballard and wife, Tena Renee, of Bells; grandchildren, Britany Beth Ballard Creamer and husband, Tyler, of Paris, Caleb Kirk Ballard of Paris, Tom Kody Ballard of Bells and Tifani Renee Ballard of Bells; two sisters, Doris Burton of Paris and Mary Sue England of White Oak; three brothers, Jody Slagle, Buck Slagle and Ray Slagle all of Paris. Casket bearers will be: Kody Ballard, Caleb Ballard, Wayne Slagle, Larry Slagle, Terry Slagle and Wes Dollins. Honorary bearers will be: Joe Slagle, Jessie Slagle, Reggie Slagle, Jake Slagle, Mike Slagle, Brandon Slagle, Gene Slagle, Jeff Slagle, Jimmy Arnold, Bradley Slagle, Robin Ballard, Lance Ballard, Mike Vaughan, Perry Duke, Eddy Simmons and Lawrence Ray Price, along with her past volleyball teammates.
