THE PARIS NEWS, Oct. 21, 2009: “COOPER, Patsy Barton, 89, loving daughter, sister, wife, aunt and friend passed away Monday, Oct. 19, 2009. Funeral services have been scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday in First United Methodist Church of Cooper with Rev. Michael Rowe officiating. Interment is to follow in Oaklawn Cemetery under the direction of Delta Funeral Home. She was born Sept. 15, 1920, the middle child of the late Claud and Ruby Pickens. She married Vernon Barton in 1942, only to lose him in death 11 years later. She devoted herself to the care of her parents and was a life-long member of Cooper First United Methodist Church. For many years she served as the church communion steward, faithfully preparing the sacraments for the congregation. She was a member of United Methodist Women and the Rebekah Lodge in Cooper. She delighted in being with her friends and serving both her church and her community. She graduated from Cooper High School in 1939 and attended Draughons Business College in Dallas. Returning to Cooper in 1942, she served as assistant to the Delta County superintendent of schools. She held the position for 37 years, retiring in 1978. Her nieces and nephews have wonderful childhood memories of the Delta County Courthouse, her office and her many courthouse friends. She ran for public office and was elected as the Delta County district clerk in 1978 and served in this capacity for 18 years. She loved Delta County and its people. She enjoyed helping the public and attending to details. It was our honor and pleasure to be blessed by your loving spirit. We will miss you. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Barton; her parents, Claud and Ruby Pickens; her brother, Joe Pickens; and her two sisters, Inez Bettes and Laverne Rush. She leaves to cherish her life and legacy her beloved sister, Dorice White of Dallas; her caretakers, niece, Leslie Hahn and husband, Steve, of Dallas; nieces, Patsy West and husband, Preston, of Gilmer, Claudia Ford and husband, Charles, of Austin, Marlia Jean Harris and husband, Cliff, of Paris, Jackie Rosga of Austin and two nephews, John Rush and wife, Carol, of San Angelo, and Joe Bates and wife, Michelle, of Elk River, Minn.; nine grand-nephews; five grand-nieces; one great-grand-nephew and one great-grand-niece. Nephews and great-nephews are to serve as pallbearers.”
