THE PARIS NEWS, Oct. 20, 2009: “Bernice Browning passed away Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, in San Antonio. Services have been scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23 at Bright-Holland Funeral Home with Rev. Charlotte Coyle officiating. Burial is to follow in Meadowbrook Gardens. The family is to receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. She was born August 22, 1917, in Lamar County, to Wiley T. and Hattie M. Lewis. She grew up on the family farm near Howland, attended area elementary schools, graduated from Paris High School and attended Paris Junior College. On December 19, 1936, she married John S. Browning of Paris. Following his service in the Border Patrol and the U.S. Army, they returned to Paris in 1946 and settled on the family farm just off of Highway 82 between Reno and Blossom. After her husband’s death in December 1990, she remained at the farm until October 1997, when she moved to Paris Oaks. In March 2007, she moved to an assisted living facility in San Antonio to be near relatives. In addition to her husband and parents, Bernice was preceded in death by her brother, Jack Lewis of Howland and Dallas; and her sister, Ardith Carhart of San Antonio. She is survived by a daughter, Linda K. McClain and husband, Don, of Muskogee, Okla., and two sons, John S. Browning Jr., and wife, Sue, of Waynesboro, Va., and James T. Browning and wife, Mary Ann, of San Antonio; nine grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Christian Church, 780 20th St. N.E., Paris, TX 75460 or the charity of one’s choice.
