THE PARIS NEWS, June 16, 2009: “VAN ALSTYNE, ReJene Howard Tatum, 86, sweetly entered into Eternity Thursday, June 11, 2009, in the comfort of her home in Mexico, Ind. Graveside services are set for 10 a.m. Friday, June 19, at Celeste Hog Eye Cemetery, in Celeste. Visitation is set for one hour prior to services, at 9 a.m., at the cemetery. Local arrangements are under the direction of Flesher Funeral Home, Van Alstyne. Born March 28, 1924, in Miami County, she was the daughter of Harry ‘Dutch’ and Martha L. Cover Howard. On June 5, 1953, she married E. Dan Tatum of Port Neches, where he owned, opened and operated Port Neches Pharmacy for 12 years. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Logansport, Ind. In 1965, they and their son, Tom, moved to their ranch in the Paris area, where they raised horses and cattle. There she enjoyed being a housewife, mom and grandmother, and serving in Holy Cross Episcopal Church. After the passing of her husband, on April 1, 1997, she returned to Indiana in May 1999 with her son, Tom, to spend her last years. There she greatly enjoyed being close to her immediate family. On Saturday, May 30, she called for Tom’s pastor. She expressed her spiritual uncertainty, saying ‘I’m dying, and I don’t know how to die. I love God, and I love Jesus, and I don’t know how to die.’ There, she was lead in a very heartfelt prayer, which yielded an obvious eternal peace and security for her. Hallelujah for the Blood of Jesus. Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband; and a stepson, Michael Tatum. Survivors include three sisters, Nell Jane Fouts, Joyce Mounts and Joellen Sharp, all of Peru, Ind.; one brother, Jon Howard, of Wabash, Ind.; son, Tom Tatum of Mexico; stepdaughter, DeRhon Jordan, Powderly, stepgrandchildren, Scott Tatum, South Lake, Dana Lipensky and Matt Tatum, Houston; and step-great-grandchildren, Matthew and Samantha Tatum and Erin and Emily Lipensky. Memorial contributions may be made to Hope for the Home Ministries, P.O. Box 975, Mount Vernon, TX 75457. Visitors may sign on-line condolences at flesherfh.com.”
