THE PARIS NEWS, June 16, 2009: “HUGO, Okla., Evalena Benton, 85, of Hugo, Okla., died Sunday, June 14, 2009. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, at the Prater-Lampton-Mills & Coffey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tom Chappele officiating with burial following in Springs Chapel Cemetery in Hugo. The family receives friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Prater-Lampton-Mills & Coffey Chapel. She was born July 7, 1923, in Gay, Okla., the daughter of D. W. and Lela Mae Barnes Abney. She had lived in this area most of her life. She married Leon Benton in 1989 in Hugo, Okla. She worked picking up pecans and picking cotton. She loved to fish, sew and do handy work. She also loved babysitting her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Leon Benton of Hugo, Okla.; one daughter, Mary Ann Ward of Powderly; six brothers, J. D. Abney of California, J. C. Abney of Ardmore, Okla., J. R. Abney of Idabel, Okla., Leo Abney of Arkansas, Ed Abney of Waco, James Abney of Georgia; five sisters, Dorothy Hitchcock of Sherman, Janice Boyd of Rattan, Okla., Velma Lou Sangster, Lou Hardaway, and Jean Abney, all of Hugo, Okla.; four grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren.
