THE PARIS NEWS, Mar. 04, 2009: “Holton W. ‘Sam’ Bass Jr., 60, of Paris passed away Monday, March 2, 2009, at his home after an extended illness due to complications from agent orange. Funeral services are conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 5, in the chapel of Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Gregg Fort officiating. Burial follows in Woodland Cemetery with military rites by the Army Funeral Detail from Fort Hood. Family receives friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. He was born Nov. 7, 1948, in Galveston, a son of Holton W. Bass and Catherine Brown Bass. He was retired from the U.S. Army and had worked for The Paris News since 1979. He was of the Baptist faith and served during the Vietnam Crisis, receiving the purple heart. He married Starla D. Baxter on May 7, 1976, in Greenville. She survives, along with three children, Jeremiah Bass, Justin Bass and Chelsea Bass; sister, Beverly Mankins and husband, Rudy; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Davis. Pallbearers will be Ricky Dority, Dean Foster, Bryan Kimbrough, Frankie Ricks, Billy Sprouse and Marty Sugg. Honorary bearers will be Calvin Gibson, W. D. Chandler, Leon Fleming, Jim Gatlin and James Sprools. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.fry-gibbs.com.”
