THE PARIS NEWS, Jan. 06, 2009: “Early Monday morning, Jan. 5, 2009, Heavens gates opened wide to receive Geraldine ‘Dean’ Birdsong into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and her beloved husband Joe. A celebration of her life is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday Jan. 7, in Fry-Gibbs Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Doug Holt officiating. Burial follows in Pyles Cemetery under the direction of Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home. The family receives friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home. The family will be at the home of Sonja Austin, 2810 Briarwood in Paris. She had been a resident of Mission Manor Nursing Home in Mount Vernon for the past several years. Formerly she lived many years in Sumner. ‘Dean’ was born Feb. 4, 1924, in Wapanucka, Okla., to Isaac B. and Sarah Hembree Winton. She attended schools in Oklahoma and Texas. On June 23, 1952, she married Silas Joe Birdsong. He preceded her in death on July 28, 2003. She was affectionately known as Mother, Mamaw or just plain Maw. She was a hard working lady having worked in several factories in Paris and had also been a hairdresser. She had a beautiful heart by raising two daughters and then adopting and raising three grandsons as her own. She and Joe were also known for their wonderful garden each year and shared its bounty with everyone. Canning and putting up corn was always a fun day that included the entire family — even little kids. She was a member of Lakeway Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; daughter, Brenda Brazier in 1997; a grandson, Ronnie Young; two brothers, Jewel and Charlie and two sisters, Beatrice and Lorene. Left to cherish her memory are daughter, Ginger Rose and husband, Don, of Mount Vernon; three sons, Dickie Birdsong and wife, Melinda, and James Birdsong and wife, Karen, of Paris, David Birdsong of Alabama; 13 grandchildren, Monti Austin and husband, Jay, of Tennessee, Jodi Birdsong and wife, Jami, Geri Birdsong and friend, John Cunningham, Dustin, Megan and Chelsie Birdsong, Jessica Sulsur, Heather Birdsong, all of Paris, Ron Howard and wife, Jennifer, of Winnsboro, Brad Rose and wife, Dena, Kenny Rose and wife, Adrinanna, all of Dallas, Greg Rose and wife, Angela, of Granbury and Rusty Rose and wife, Rachel, of Shady Shores; 12 great-grandchildren, Joshua and Sarah Austin of Tennessee, Evelyn Jane Birdsong, Tera and Taylor Howard, all of Paris, Eric and Austin Rose of Mount Vernon, Shelby, Madison, Hope and Joshua Rose of Granbury, Allie and Jacee Rose of Shady Shores; two brothers, Delane Winton and wife, Reba, of Powderly, Vernon Winton and wife, Nancy, of Oklahoma; sister, Minnie Freeman of Humble and multitude of nieces and nephews, cousins and other in-laws.
