THE PARIS NEWS, July 08, 2007: “Octa Sammie Fox Burris, 92, died Friday, July 6, 2007, in Paris Nursing Home, at which time Bright-Holland Funeral Home received her into its care. Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, July 9, in Evergreen Cemetery with the Rev. Randall Scott officiating. The family will be at the home of Carol and Charles Kelly. She was born Aug. 12, 1914, in Addington Bend, Okla., to Jessie and Fannie Hodges Fox. She married William Jasper Burris on Nov. 26, 1932, in Hollister, Okla. He preceded her in death on Oct. 13, 1965. She was a resident of Madera, Calif., for 47 years. She had lived independently until two months before her 90th birthday at which time she moved to Paris. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at the age of 16. She was a member of First Southern Baptist Church of Madera, and had taught Sunday school for 69 years, 41 of those being at First Southern Baptist Church in Madera, only retiring at the age of 89 because of her failing health. In 2003, she was recognized by the California Southern Baptist Convention for 69 years of faithful service as a Sunday school teacher. Her favorite scripture was II Timothy 2:15. She was also the church pianist for a number of years having self-taught herself how to play the piano. She was a songwriter, both lyrics and music, and had written many songs. One song entitled ‘She Waves’ was written about our nation’s flag and is performed every 4th of July by the First Southern Baptist Church Choir. She is the author of ‘Among the Briers,’ which is the story of her life, and is also a published poet having written poetry since the age of 12. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; son, Arno Lynn Burris; daughter, Sammie Stephenson; and four sisters, Opal Allen, Olda Jack, Pearl McGuire and Dink Nelson. She is survived by a daughter, Carol Kelly and husband, Charles, of Paris; two sons, Allen Burris of Madera and Ken Burris; two cousins, Myrtle Schults of Duncan, Okla., and Fred Hodges and wife, Mary, of Moore, Okla.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
