THE PARIS NEWS, May 21, 2008: “Verdie Mae Cummings Beard, 91, of Memphis, Tenn., died Friday, May 16, 2008, in Tennessee. Graveside services are conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, May 23, in the Evergreen Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Chandler officiating. Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. She was born April 18, 1917, in Biardstown, Lamar Co., the daughter of Stephen Elijah and Christain Ann McCall Cummings. She attended Paris schools and worked for 25 years as a machine operator UARCO. She was a long time member of the First Christian Church of Paris. She married Robert ‘Bob’ Beard on Feb. 17, 1939, in Hugo, Okla., and they shared a life together for over 63 years. He preceded her in death in 2002. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Julia Ann Beard Marcrum of Memphis Tenn.; granddaughter, Damie Lee Marcrum; brothers, Ernest Floyd Cummings, and Elvis Cummings, both of Paris; sisters, Mary Cummings Holt, of Paris, Annie Lee Cummings Barnett, of Arlington, Marie Cummings Hubbard, of Maybank. Survivors include grandson, Charles E. Marcrum of Memphis, and numerous nieces and nephews. Online condolences may be sent to the Beard family by visiting www.fry-gibbs.com.”
