THE PARIS NEWS, Tuesday, May 21, 1935, p. 8: “MAMMY TURNER IS CALLED BY DEATH. Esther Turner, colored woman who was known to many Paris citizens as 'Mammy,' died Monday morning at her home after an illness which had confined her to her bed for the past several weeks. Her funeral was held Tuesday afternoon. She had been a servant for several families in Paris and for the past six years until her illness she had been employed by Mrs. Bedford Harlan as nursemaid for her children by whom she was affectionately known as 'Mammy' and she was held in high esteem by them and her many white friends.”
