THE PARIS NEWS, Nov. 26, 2006: "Alvis Wayne Bates, 71, of Blossom died Friday, Nov. 24, 2006, at Dubuis Hospital. Funeral services are set for 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 27, at East Paris Baptist Church with the Rev. Henry Blackmon officiating. Burial follows in East Post Oak Cemetery under the direction of Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home. Blossom Masonic Lodge No. 303 conducts Masonic graveside rites. The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. He was born Dec. 9, 1934, in Faught, a son of W. A. 'Bill' and Clara Clarkson Bates. He married Billie Ruth Lee on Sept. 5, 1953, in Mount Pleasant. He was a loving husband, father, and granddaddy. He was a member of East Post Oak Missionary Baptist Church. After 35 years he retired in 1992 as assistant maintenance foreman with the Texas Department of Transportation. He served the Lord as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and elder at East Post Oak Missionary Baptist Church. He was also a very active Mason for more than 50 years. In addition, he was a recipient of the Golden Trowel Award and currently served as junior deacon for Blossom Masonic Lodge No. 303. He was a trusted and loyal friend to many and felt that it was his duty to care for the less fortunate. All who knew him were blessed by his loving heart and kind spirit. Even in death, he continues to be a beacon for his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Billie Ruth; two children, daughter Patty Bates and son Mark Bates and wife, Tammie. Grandchildren are Lisa Mullens and spouse, Paul, Chad Long and spouse, Ginger, Amanda Long and fianceƩ, Tim Cryer, Stepanie Eller and spouse, Brian, Aaron Bates and spouse, Michele, and Leah Bates. His precious and greatly blessed great-grandchildren will dearly miss him: Maverick, Matthew, Chris, Payton, Wesley, and William; sisters, Betty Low and spouse, Thomas, Wanda Hart, Billie Ann Jennings and spouse, Jack; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Jason Bounds, Jerry Tucker Jr., Claude Tyler, Terry Henderson, Sid Johnson and Nathan Leverett. Honorary pallbearers will be Aaron Bates, Chad Long and Paul Mullens. If desired, memorials may be made to East Post Oak Missionary Baptist Church and online condolences maybe sent to the Bates Family at www.fry-gibbs.com."

On the same stone with Billie Ruth Bates, married Sept. 5, 1953. Also has military marker inscribed, "SSG US Army."
