THE PARIS NEWS, Sunday, August 20, 1944, p. 4: “[photo] Pfc. Newton E. Beville, of the old National Guard unit in Paris before the war and now stationed in Italy, was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for ‘gallantry in action,’ it was announced by Headquarters, 36th Infantry Division, July 8. The citation to Private Beville, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Beville of Petty, read: ‘Private Beville was assigned as a member of the artillery forward observer party. During the intense fighting resulting from an attack on fiercely-defended enemy positions, he secured a rifle from a wounded soldier and, acting on his own initiative, took a position in the rifle line and participated in the fire fight. Later, while constantly exposed to sweeping enemy machine gun fire, he laid a vial fire control line and remained as a telephone operator to relay the fire commands to the artillery. While performing this essential talk, he lay in an uncovered position, imperiled by the heavy small arms and sniper fire.’ It was signed by Major Gen. Fred L. Walker, former commanding officer of the 36th. Private Beville is an ex-student of Paris Junior College, and prior to that attended Honey Grove High School.”
