Gay Moore Barr, 82, of Blossom passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at her residence. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, July 29, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ray David Rucker officiating. Burial follows in Knights of Honor Cemetery in Blossom under the direction of Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home. The family receives friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. She was born May 29, 1923, in Blossom, to Percy Caruthers and Nina Van Dyke Moore. She married William Howard Barr on Jan. 2, 1945, in Blossom. She graduated from Blossom High School as valedictorian of her class, then attended Paris Junior College and North Texas State Teachers' College, and graduated from the University of Texas in Austin, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, in 1943. She also worked in the Attorney General's office while she attended school. Later she received a master's degree in library science from East Texas State College. She taught for 32 years in Paris and Arlington schools, retiring from Crockett Junior High School. She enjoyed retirement as long as her health permitted, serving two terms as regent of the Joseph Ligon Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution; volunteering at St. Joseph's Hospital and her church; participating as an active member of the Modern Study Club/Lamar County Retired Teachers Association, and past president of Delta Kappa Gamma; and pursuing hobbies of gardening and crafts. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and was president of her Sunday school class. She will be remembered for her selfless devotion and kindness to others, her courage and strength in the face of adversity, her consummate integrity, her elegance and refined manner, her love for her family, and her capacity for forgiveness. She maintained her sense of humor and ability to recite long and difficult poetry through her last days and set a shining example that we can only hope to emulate. Mama Gay, you were a beautiful person inside and out and we will miss you so much. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Goldberg and husband, Mike, of Katy, and Patricia Hadley Gonzales and husband, Riccardo, of Longview; grandchildren, Amy Long and husband, Kelly Jack, Bryan Hadley and wife, Elizabeth, Jeff Goldberg and Jason Goldberg; great-grandchildren, Payton Long, Tanner Long and Hudson Hadley; a sister, Carroll Starnes and husband, Ray, of Paris; step-grandchildren, Andrea Tomek and husband, George, and David Gonzales; niece, LeAnn Barbee and husband, Pat; nephews, Charles Starnes and wife, Pam, and Jeff Starnes and wife, Tammi; numerous cousins; and a host of friends. Pallbearers are Bryan Hadley, Jeff Goldberg, Jason Goldberg, Charles Starnes, David Gonzales and George Tomek. If desired, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or a charity of choice.'
