THE PARIS NEWS, Jul. 19, 2005: 'CLARKSVILLE, Robert L. Irby, 89, of Deport died Sunday, July 17, 2005, in Deport Nursing Home, after having suffered a severe stroke this past Thanksgiving Day. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 20, at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Ed Dodson officiating. Graveside services are set for 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Hillcrest Memorial Park in Texarkana. Arrangements are under the direction of Clarksville Funeral Home. The family receives friends an hour before service time at the church. He was born Oct. 10, 1915, in Corley. He was a World War II veteran and served his country in Guadacanal. He was a tough man. He survived cancer of the larynx in the early 1980s and spoke with an artificial speaker held to his throat. He spent many hours practicing this art so he could speak well to everyone. He loved the woods and knew about every tree, plant and animal on his farm. He accepted whatever life brought, never wavering, never losing his sense of humor. He found joy in the smallest things, his greatest joy the past couple of years being his great-granddaughter. He had spent the last year taking care of his wife. He had been in Deport Nursing Home since before Christmas, where he had been given exquisite care by the staff, particularly by Lisa and Jackie, who have been the family's blessing. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Robert Eric Hanson. He is survived by his spouse, Leona Benson Irby; his son, Robert Lee Irby of Clarksville; his daughter, Nancy Irby Taylor of Prosper; grandsons, Ramsey Hanson, Kenneth Taylor and Kevin Taylor; and one great-granddaughter, Alexis Hanson.'
