THE PARIS NEWS, June 10, 2018: “Mattylu Upchurch, age 97, of Milton, died Thursday, June 7, 2018, at Heritage House of Paris. Funeral Services were scheduled for 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, June 9, in the First Methodist Church of Deport with the Rev. Susan Leddy officiating. Burial followed in Milton Cemetery with grandchildren serving as pallbearers. The family received friends in the sanctuary of the church beginning at 6 p.m. until service time. Wood Funeral Homes of Deport had charge of the arrangements. She was born on Nov. 9, 1920, near Deport, the daughter of Tom and Lara Forest Walter Harvey. The Harvey family were some of the original settlers to the area. She married William [Bill] Upchurch on Jan. 28, 1939. Together they owned and operated Dry Cleaners in New Mexico for many years, before retiring back to Milton in 1979. Mrs. Upchurch was an excellent seamstress and quilter and was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Deport. She was preceded in death by her parents and nine brothers and sisters, including Mary Elaine Lawler and husband, Morris. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Bill, in 1998; her daughter and son-in-law, Bobbie and Ed Hill, in 2005; and her daughter, Billie Goheen, in 2007. She is survived by her children, Don Upchurch, of Deport, Jim Upchurch and Cynthia, of Los Ranchos, New Mexico, Leah and Michael Upchurch-Frazier, of Grapevine; 16 grandchildren; and a great prosperity of great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Milton Cemetery Association, c/o Barbara Richards, 3820 Castlegate Drive, Paris, Texas 75462.” Submitted by Viola Broyles.
