THE PARIS NEWS, Nov. 25, 2003: 'FRANKLIN, Pa., Fred L. Blackhurst Sr., 81, of Franklin, Pa., died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, in his home. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 24, in St. Patrick's Catholic Church with the pastor, the Rev. Robert Manning, officiating. Born July 8, 1922, in Cass, W.Va., he was the son of George Victor and Margaret Linnan Blackhurst. He was an army captain during World War II. He was part of the U.S. Army's 42nd 'Rainbow' Division that forged its way north through France in October and November, 1944. He was a platoon sergeant at the time. He returned to Franklin on Feb. 1, 1946, with a Bronze Star, a Silver Star and a European Theater Badge with four battle stars to his credit. He retired in 1983 as a welder and pipe fitter for the Pipe Fitters and Steam Fitters Local 47 Union. He also owned and operated Fred's Texaco at Coefield's Corners. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, a member of the Franklin Elks 110 and a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed golf and refurbishing furniture. He regularly attended 42nd 'Rainbow' Division reunions. He was married Dec. 19, 1942, to Adelaide E. Karns, who survives. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Robert Gilbert, Charles Gilbert and James Blackhurst; and a sister, Mary Alice Wood. Also surviving are a son, Fred L. Blackhurst Jr. and wife, Candace, of Franklin; two daughters, Rebecca Nash and husband, Gary, of Paris and Peggy Brubeck and husband, Tom, of Strongsville, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Eric Brubeck and wife, Stacey, of Cleveland, Ohio, Chad Brubeck and wife, Ann, of Brunswick Hills, Ohio, Ryan Brubeck of Medina, Ohio, Michael Blackhurst of Austin, Leesa Vitek and husband, Jeff, of Silver Springs, Md., Lori Blackhurst of Pittsburgh, Pa., Stephen Nash and wife, Ginger, of Dallas and Stacey England and husband, Guy, of Dallas; four great-grandchildren, Harrison England of Dallas and Samantha Harry, Mason Metcalf and Kaitlyn Metcalf, all of Brunswick Hills; brother, George Blackhurst of Graviola Mills, Mo.; and a sister, Grace Ferguson of Milton Freewater, Ore. If desired, the family requests memorials be made to the Franklin Elks Club, Lodge No. 110, 1309 Buffalo St., Franklin, Pa., 16323, or to the Visiting Nurse Association, 176 Bissell Ave., Oil City, Pa., 16301.'
