THE PARIS NEWS, Oct. 06, 2003: 'DEPORT, L. C. 'Shorty' Ballard, 91, of Deport died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, in Christus St. Joseph's Hospital South. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6, in the Abundant Life Church of Minter with the Rev. Tony Corso and the Rev. Glynn Renfro officiating. Burial followed in Shady Grove Cemetery under the direction of Wood Funeral Homes. He was born March 8, 1912, in Clardy, the son of Rupert Loyd and Clare Elizabeth Walker Ballard. On Jan. 28, 1933, he married Flossie Marie Upchurch. She preceded him in death on Feb. 15, 1994. He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Loyd Wayne Ballard and three brothers, Alvin Odis Ballard, Roland Washington Ballard and Ramond Loyd Ballard. He was retired from B&W and was a farmer and rancher, working up until a recent broken hip forced him to retire. He was known throughout Deport and the surrounding area for his gardening skills and was constantly bringing people vegetables that he had grown. He was a charter member of the Abundant Life Church in Minter where he assisted in its construction and renovation. Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Joe and Lynda Ballard of Deport and Jack and Glenda Ballard of Texarkana; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a half sister and brother, Peggy Rainey of Paris and Dennis Ballard of Alaska.'
