| Notes THE PARIS NEWS, Jun. 04, 2003: 'SOLDOTNA, Alaska, Nancy Marvilene Upchurch, 79, former Anchorage, Alaska resident, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Heritage Place in Soldotna in the presence of family members. She was born Aug. 10, 1923, in Manchester, to Marvin W. and Fannie May Johnston Covington. She arrived in Whittier, Alaska with her children aboard the USS O'Hara in 1957 to be with her husband, Joe, a civilian employee at the Army base. She worked as a civil servant for the U.S. Army while at Whittier and later at Fort Richardson from 1964 to 1975, while living in Anchorage. The Upchurches moved back to Manchester when Joe retired in 1975. They established and operated the Pine Creek grocery and cafe, returning to Alaska in 1999 due to their declining health and to be with their children. In retirement, she enjoyed making and selling crafts, gardening and being with her family. She had a sharp sense of humor, a word of encouragement and a love of new adventure. She is preceded in death by her son, Bobby and her husband, Joe. Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Nell Nelson of Soldotna; her son, Billy Mac Upchurch of Eagle River, Alaska; her daughter, Karen Ann Higley of Baker, Ore.; her son, Kenneth Ray Upchurch of Bandera; sisters, Mary Frances Bailey of Plano and Ann Lou Grimmet of Uniontown, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. THE PARIS NEWS, Sep. 25, 2003: 'CLARKSVILLE, Memorial services for Joe Farris Upchurch and Nancy Marvilene Covington Upchurch will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at the Manchester Cemetery in Manchester under the direction of Clarksville Funeral Home. Both were former residents of Paris and Manchester. He died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at Soldotna, Alaska. He was 79. Joe Farris Upchurch was born May 2, 1923, in Paris, of the union between Lena Leona Hogan and Chester Leonard Upchurch. He served in the United States Army as an infantryman during World War II. He remained proud of having served his country and maintained a lifelong respect for the nation's flag. He was preceded in death by his son, Bobby Joe Upchurch of Paris; brother, Chester Freeman Upchurch of Paris; and sister, Mary Ethel Jane Clark of Sulphur Springs. He was survived by his wife, Nancy Marvilene; daughters, Nancy Nell Nelson of Soldotna and Karen Ann Higley of Baker, Ore.; sons, Billy Mac Upchurch of Eagle River, Alaska and Kenneth Ray Upchurch of Bandera; a sister, Betty June McCool of Duncanville; and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
