THE PARIS NEWS, Oct. 11, 2002: "SOLDOTNA, Alaska, Joe F. Upchurch, 79, of Soldotna, Alaska, died peacefully Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at Heritage Place. He was born May 2, 1923, in Paris, the son of Lena Leona Hogan and Chester Leonard Upchurch. He served in the U.S. Army as an infantryman during World War II, landing at Normandy just days after the invasion, and fighting across Europe to end the war in Nuremberg. He remained proud of having served his country and maintained a lifelong respect for the nation's flag. He came to Alaska in 1957 and worked at the Port of Whittier. In the years following, the Upchurches lived at Portage and Anchorage. He was preceded in death by one son, Bobby Joe Upchurch of Paris; one brother, Chester Freeman Upchurch of Paris; and one sister, Mary Ethel Jane Clark of Sulphur Springs. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Marvilene; daughter, Nancy Nell Nelson of Soldotna; sons, Billy Mac Upchurch of Eagle River, Alaska and Kenneth Ray Upchurch of Bandera; daughter, Karen Ann Higley of Baker, Ore.; sister, Betty June McCool of Duncanville; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. If desired, memorials may be sent to Heritage Place, 232 Rockwell, Soldotna, Alaska 99669."

THE PARIS NEWS, Sep. 25, 2003: 'CLARKSVILLE, Memorial services for Joe Farris Upchurch and Nancy Marvilene Covington Upchurch will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at the Manchester Cemetery in Manchester under the direction of Clarksville Funeral Home. Both were former residents of Paris and Manchester. He died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at Soldotna, Alaska. He was 79. Joe Farris Upchurch was born May 2, 1923, in Paris, of the union between Lena Leona Hogan and Chester Leonard Upchurch. He served in the United States Army as an infantryman during World War II. He remained proud of having served his country and maintained a lifelong respect for the nation's flag. He was preceded in death by his son, Bobby Joe Upchurch of Paris; brother, Chester Freeman Upchurch of Paris; and sister, Mary Ethel Jane Clark of Sulphur Springs. He was survived by his wife, Nancy Marvilene; daughters, Nancy Nell Nelson of Soldotna and Karen Ann Higley of Baker, Ore.; sons, Billy Mac Upchurch of Eagle River, Alaska and Kenneth Ray Upchurch of Bandera; a sister, Betty June McCool of Duncanville; and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Nancy Marvilene Covington Upchurch died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Soldotna. She was 79. She was born Aug. 10, 1923, in Manchester to Marvin W. and Fannie May Johnston Covington. She enjoyed making and selling crafts, gardening and being with her family. She had a sharp sense of humor, a word of encouragement and a love of a new adventure. She was preceded in death by her brother, Richard Lee Covington; son, Bobby; and husband, Joe. She is survived by daughter, Nancy Nell Nelson of Soldotna; son, Billy Mac Upchurch of Eagle River; daughter, Karen Ann Higley of Baker; son, Kenneth Ray Upchurch of Bandera; sister, Mary Frances Bailey of Plano; and sister, Ann Lou Grimmett of Uniontown, Ohio. They had nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. The Upchurches moved to the Port of Whittier army base in Alaska in 1957. They moved back to Manchester when he retired in 1975. They established and operated the Pine Creek grocery and cafe, returning to Alaska in 1999 due to their declining health and to be with their children."
