THE PARIS NEWS, Jun. 20, 2003: "Charles Darvin Bates, 81, of Paris died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at his residence. Funeral services are set for 10 a.m. Saturday, June 21, in Gene Roden’s Sons Funeral Home Chapel with Patrick Cannon officiating. Interment will follow in Restland Cemetery in Roxton under the direction of Gene Roden’s Sons Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 20, at Roden Funeral Home. He was born Dec. 31, 1921, in Cooper, the son of Jesse and Ambie Bates Ausburn. He married Naomi Preston on Jan. 30, 1946, in Ramseur Baptist Church in Paris. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Air Force. He and his wife lived in La Mirada, Calif., for 35 years where he was employed with Automatic Sprinkler Inc., retiring in 1981. The couple moved back to Paris in 1982, where he enjoyed fishing and bowling. He was a member of the Moose Lodge for many years and a member of Teamsters Union Local 598 for more than 32 years. Survivors include his wife, Naomi of Paris; son, Richard Bates of Paris; two daughters, Sheila McDon-ough and husband, Nick, of Whittier, Calif. and Linda Wysong of Paris; four granddaughters, Theresa, Kimberly, Deborah and Callie; one grandson, Adam; four great-grandchildren, Justin, Jacob, McKenzie and Marissa Nicole."

Military marker inscribed, "PFC US Army - World War II."
