THE PARIS NEWS, Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001: 'John David Ball, 81, of Paris died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001 at Christus St. Joseph's Hospital North. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday Dec. 27, 2001 at Fry and Gibbs Funeral Home with Dr. Burt Palmer and the Rev. Glynn Vickers officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. John 'Shorty' was born June 22, 1920 in Minter, the son of Johnie W. and Ruby Dennison Ball. He married Ruth Hulsey on Dec. 13, 1950 in Paris. He served his country in the U.S. Army, first as part of the mounted cavalry in the 1st Cavalry Division, then later in the 361st Infantry Division, seeing action in North Africa and Italy during World War II. His decorations included the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Combat Infantry Badge. Mr. Ball was a retired rural mail carrier, serving the people on route one in Pattonville and route seven in Paris for many years. He belonged to the American Legion Post 199 in Deport and was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife Ruth; three children, Paul æButch' Yates and wife Shirley of Detroit, Ruth Ann Yates Jones and husband Roy of Minter, Colonel John E. Ball and wife Wyn of Prattville, Ala.; six grandchildren, Joanna Pitcock, David Yates, Mark Keyes, John Paul Yates, Jessie Ball and Karla Ball; four great-grandchildren, Mitchell and Jacey Pitcock and Kaitlyn and Kolton Yates. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association or your favorite charity.'
