THE PARIS NEWS, Monday, July 23, 2001: 'BOGATA - Johnny Topping, 85, of Bogata died Saturday, July 21, 2001, in Red River Health Care Center. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, in First Baptist Church of Bogata with the Rev. Bob Posey officiating. Burial will be in Bogata Cemetery by Wood Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 8 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Mr. Topping was born Nov. 12, 1915, in Millerton, Okla., to Daniel M. and Francis C. Sanford Topping. He married Willie Mae Skidmore March 6, 1939. He and his wife operated a grocery store in Bogata for several years. He was a retired carpenter and was a longtime member, Sunday school teacher, and a deacon of First Baptist Church of Bogata, having been ordained in 1966. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Linda Williams of Prattville, Ala., and Kay Selman of Lufkin; two sisters, Carrine Alford and Lucille Pettit, both of Bogata; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; two sons-in-law, Norris Phipps of Tenaha, Texas and James Watts of Rockwall. He was preceded in death by 2 daughters, Wanda Lou Phipps July 3, 1985, and Johnnie Mac Watts, Oct. 19, 2000. Pallbearers will be the Deacon Board of First Baptist Church.'
