THE PARIS NEWS, Monday, January 15, 2001, page 1: 'One killed in early morning crash By Laura Jett Krantz The Paris News Published January 15, 2001 One man was killed and another injured early today after their vehicle struck a parked tractor trailer from behind just south of Arthur City. Department of Public Safety Trooper Patrick Heintz said the tractor trailer, carrying petroleum products, was parked on the east shoulder of U.S. Highway 271 N. just south of Arthur City when the accident happened. 'The (tractor trailer) driver had pulled over to the side of the road to inspect his truck,' Heintz said. 'He was well off the side of the road when this happened.' Heintz said a northbound one-ton Dodge dual-axle pickup struck the tractor trailer from behind at 5:45 a.m. 'The passenger was ejected,' Heintz said. 'The driver sustained pretty serious injuries and the Dodge came to rest in the center median. The cab was torn off the truck.' The passenger died at the scene and the driver was transported to McCuistion Regional Medical Center where he is listed in fair condition. The tractor trailer driver was not injured. Immediately following the fatality accident, a collision occurred on the southbound side of Highway 271 when the driver of a southbound Chevrolet pickup stopped in the outside lane of traffic to help. 'The other accident happened within seconds after the first accident,' Heintz said. '(The pickup) was struck from behind by a Blue Bell ice cream truck.' The driver of the pick-up sustained minor injuries and the driver of the Blue Bell ice cream truck was uninjured. Heintz said alcohol was not a factor in either accident although driver fatigue may have been the cause in the initial collision. '(The passenger and driver) were coming up from Sulphur Springs to work in Oklahoma somewhere,' he said.'
