THE PARIS NEWS, Mon., Jan. 27, 1997, p. 5A: 'J. D. Ballard, 71, of Bogata, died at 1:25 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, 1997, in St. Joseph's Hospital and Health Center. Services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, in Fry and Gibbs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Union Grove Cemetery near Reno. He was born May 8, 1925 [sic] in Childress to George Washington and Myrtle Libby Hossier Ballard. He graduated from King County schools and Cottle County schools served in the Navy during World War II. At age 14, he began working on the Four Six's Ranch chuck wagon with Richard Bolt. He married Linda Eubanks Shawhart Nov. 25, 1989, in Paris. She survives. He first married Maude Jewel Barker MeGon and later married Ruby Lee Pilkington Baxley who died in 1987. He retired from B&B Construction Co. after many years in the construction business. He attended Lifetime Worship Center in Reno. Surviving are his wife, Linda; four children, Melba Allen of Bogata, Verna Armstrong of Paducah, Jimmy Ballard of Paris and Roy Ballard of Lone Star; seven stepchildren, Helen Sugg of Paris, Clifford Baxley of Bagwell, Staci Young, Jeff Shawhart, and Kelly Sanders all of Powderly, Donna Houston of Bogata and Sandra Merritt of Paris; 38 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and two special fishing buddies, Beverly and Travis Maynard of Bogata. He was preceded in death by one stepson, Gerald Baxley. Pallbearers will be Ricky Chennault, Harry Heflin, Travis Maynard, Kenneth Yarbrough, Barney Bray II and Gleman Black. Honorary bearers will be Jack Fleming, Paul Smith, Jeff Merritt and Jimmy Swartz.'

Tombstone is inscribed, 'J. D.' and with a birth date of 8 May 1920. Double marker with Ruby Lee Ballard. Buried next to Ellis Wright and Herbert B. Baxley. Married Ruby Lee Pilkington.
