THE PARIS NEWS, Monday, January 4, 1999, page 4B: 'HUGO, Okla. - J. V. Bowen, 81, of Valliant, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, in McCurtain Memorial Hospital in Idabel. Mr. Boren was born Sept. 27, 1917, in Swink, Okla., a son of Joseph Bowen and Mary Elizabeth (Davis) Bowen. He married Lena Speck on Oct. 2, 1938, in Slim, Okla. He lived most of his life in this area working as a logger, sawmill operator, mechanic, dairyman and miner. He retired in 1979 as the shop foreman for Bobby Glover Construction. He was a member of the Valliant Masonic Lodge and was a member of Watermill Freewill Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Otis, Clovis, Cletus, Clyde and Roy; and three sisters, Mabeline Bowen, Merle Bowen and Pauline Gibson. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, in Pilgrims Rest Baptist Church, with the Rev. Troy Ruffin and the Rev. Melvin Holeman officiating. Burial will be in Moran Cemetery under direction of Mt. Olive Funeral Home of Hugo. Survivors include his wife, Lena Bowen; three daughters, Joyce Vaughn Powell of Idabel, Betty Jean Whatley of Rufe and B. Charlene Efaw of Valliant; a son, Troy Lee Bowen of Valliant; a brother, Shorty Bowen of Rufe; three sisters, Veda Pearl Collis of Hawkins, Texas, Elma Lee Christopher of Red Oak, Texas, and Lola Mae Davis of Sulphur Springs, Texas; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.'
