Notes

THE PARIS NEWS, 3 Apr 1962: 'Mrs. Fred R. Baker, 2045 W. Kaufman St., died Tuesday at the Sanitarium of Paris after two or three months' illness. The funeral, Wednesday at 2 p.m. will be held at Fry and Gibbs chapel by the Rev. R.L. Ferguson of First Presbyterian Church, where Mrs. Baker was a member. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery will be made by the side of her husband who died in 1940. She leaves a son, Thomas R. Baker, San Francisco, Calif.; a brother, Matthew Boyd Park, Paris, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Baker was the former Miss Virginia Isabel (Zella) Park, daughter of Charles Thomas Park and his wife, Sue (Boyd) Park, and was born at Ambia, 9 Jul 1889. The family moved to Paris when she was a child, and she attended public schools here, and Texas Presbyterian College at Milford. She and Mr. Baker were married here 26 Jun 1912. She was a past president of Lamar Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and active in church work. For about 20 years, she had been employed as a sales clerk, at old Alexander Book Store, and R.J. Murphy Drug Store, and most recently at Ray Rhodes' Drug Store, after a short time as a hostess at the Faculty Club house at Van.'

From the records of Lamar #258 United Daughters of the Confederacy: 'Zella Park Baker was admitted on 10 Jan. 1918 as a member of the Lamar Chapter UDC under her father's CSA record. Charles T. Park served in Co. F, 2nd Mississippi, Forrest's Division, Lowry's Regiment.

Tombstone is inscribed, 'Zella Park Baker.

IN MEMORIAM - Zella Park Baker - Lamar Chapter, United Daughters of Confederacy, extend to you our sympathy in the loss of your loved one, our dear member. On April 3, 1962, Virginia Isabella Park Baker, lovingly called Zella, slipped out of time into eternity. Her bark had been frail for some time, but she had sailed gallantly on with but few of her intimate friends knowing it was so storm-tossed. Constant in her attendance whenever possible, ready to play her part in any of the chapter's undertakings, and with a dry wit, she made her presence known among us and will be sorely missed when we come together. So to her loved ones we would say, grieve not, for it was great to have known and loved so brave a soul. 'Twilight and evening bell,/ And after that the dark!/ And may there be no sadness of farewell,/ When I embark. For though from out our bourne of Time and Place/ The flood may bear me far., I hope to see my Pilot face to face/ When I have crossed the bar.' Respectfully submitted Memorial Committee, Lamar Chapter, U. D. C.' This memoriam was signed by Nina S. Wells and Gussie Hall.
