J. H. Baker Pvt., Co. F, Whitfield's Legion, 27th TX Cavalry 1834 - 13 Sep 1901 Buried at Odd Fellow Cemetery in the NORTHWEST Section From Rodgers and Wade Furniture Co. Funeral Records in possession of Fry and Gibbs Funeral Home; Book #3; p.80; Service #159; Date of Funeral 14 Sept 1901; place of death, N. Main St.; attending physician, Chapman, J. B.; married; color White; age 68 years; place of services at Residence; name of Clergyman, G. Lyell Smith; ordered by R. R. Baker; casket #3, size 5/9; robe & socks; carriages 4; open grave. Tombstone is inscribed 'J. H. Baker, Aged 67 Years.' There was a J. Baker enlisted as Private on 4 Jan 1862 in Co. E, 9th Texas Infantry. This is not the same one unless he re-enlisted in another organization. Service Record states: Baker, J.- enlisted 1/4/62; no other record. Information from his Texas Confederate Pension #02433: J. H. Baker, applied on 10 Aug 1899, approved 11 Oct 1899. He was age 66 at application, has been 5 years resident of Lamar County, served in Co. F, Whitfield's Legion, 18th TX [should be 27th] Cavalry, was in Ross' Brigade from Mar 1862 until 19 Sep 1862 and afterward had post duty in Rusk, TX. Mrs. R. J. Baker received a Texas Confederate Pension #09064 for the service of her husband J. H. Baker in the Confederate Army. An abstract of the pension shows: applied 3 Mar 1902, approved 19 Jul 1902, her age was 64, had lived in Paris for 8 years, they married in Jun 1854 in Lexington, KY, he died 7 Aug 1901. R. M. deposed that Baker served in Co. F, Whitfield's Legion, 27th TX Cavalry, from March 1862 to 19 Sep 1862 and afterwards on post duty at Rusk, TX.
