THE PARIS NEWS, Sunday, 18 Sep 1938, p. 5: “BROTHERS SERVICE - Funeral service for J. B. Brothers of Powderly, Rt. 1, who died Wednesday, was held Friday at Emberson-Brown-Roden funeral home here, conducted by the Rev. N. C. Walters of Powderly, Baptist preacher, interment being made at Evergreen cemetery. Pall bearers were Lee Smyers, V. A. Albright, B. A. Davis, N. C. Justiss, Josh Duncan and Horace Sparks. Brothers, 81 years old, leaves his wife and seven children, 14 grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.”

Information from Ron Brothers, Paris, TX, 75460; Born in Rutherford County, Tennessee, son of Thomas & Martha Jane Thomas Brothers, grandson of Francis & Sarah Jane Penn Brothers. He first married Josey Summers on 3 Sep 1877. They had three children, Catherine, Myrtle and Effie. He lived in Fosterville, TN. and helped his father manage the farm that had been in the family since the 1820?s. Josey died about 1895 and he married Martha Etta Nichols, daughter of Joseph Roe and Panther Royal Overby Nichols, on 12 Sep 1896. They had five children on the same homestead, Joseph Thomas, Bennie Mae, Royal Pantha, Lou Helen and a stillborn child. When his father died in 1903, James moved his family to join his brother-in-law, Robert Coleman Nichols, in the Sylvan Community of Lamar County. Later Martha, his wife, died while attending his ailing mother back in Tennessee in 1915. He then married Addie Morgan Price on 9 Dec 1916 in Lamar County and they had one child, Marshall Harold. James was a farmer all his life and ran a small peanut thrashing business for his neighbors. He died of a heart attack at the home of his son Royal Pantha Brothers in Powderly.
