THE PARIS NEWS, Sunday, November 27, 1921, p.4: "A. J. Ulmer, a well known citizen of Paris, died at 4:15 o’clock yesterday evening at his home on South Fifteenth street after a long illness. The funeral will be from the Church of the Holy Cross, Episcopal at 10:30 o’clock tomorrow morning. The services will be conducted by Rev. Harold G. Hennessy. Alexander Joseph Ulmer, who was one of the pioneer residents of Paris, was born in Selma, Ala., February 28, 1845. He ran away from a boarding school when he was 16 years old and joined the Confederate army. He served under the gallant General John H. Gordon until the war closed. He came to Texas in 1871 and located in Lamar county. He has resided continuously in the county and in Paris since that date. He was city marshall for several terms in the ’80’s, and was a popular man whom everybody respected. He was in the dairy farming business for a number of years. He retired from active business about three years ago. He is survived by two daughters, Mr. J. P. Wirfs of Shawnee, Ok., and Mrs. T. G. Henley of Paris, and by one son, C. H. Ulmer of Fort Towson, Ok. He leaves one sister, Mrs. Wm. T. Jones of Dallas."

From the records of Lamar #258 United Daughters of the Confederacy: Alexander Joseph Ulmer served in the Confederate Army as Private in Co. G, 6th Alabama Regiment. He was married to Clara C. Hogue. A daughter, Elizabeth Ulmer, was born 26 Feb. 1868, in Alabama. She married J. P. Wirfs. She was a member of the Lamar Chapter #258 UDC under her father’s CSA record.
