Tombstone is inscribed 'John A. Baker.' Lamar Co. Marriage Record Book 3, p. 284: John A. Baker married Elizabeth Ward on 13 Jul 1865. THE PARIS NEWS, Wednesday, November 22, 1916, p. 8: 'John A. Baker, 74 years of age, died at 10:30 o'clock last night at the family home, 19 North 17th street, after a long illness from a chronic trouble, which had been acute for the past three months. Funeral services will be held there at 2 o'clock this afternoon by Revs. Luther Rees and J. S. Flacks and burial will be at Evergreen. Mr. Baker, a pioneer citizen, was married in 1865 and his wife survives him. His children are Mesdames W. T. Christian and Emmet Whittle of Paris, John Scott of Dallas, and Messrs. Ben Baker of Bonham and Joe Baker of Dallas. His brothers, R. P. Baker of Paris and Billy Baker of New Mexico, and his sisters, Mesdames Ann Logsdon of Fort Worth and M. D. Murphy and C. N. Martin of Paris are among his living relatives.' John Armstrong Baker received a Texas Confederate Pension #29777 for his service in the Confederate Army. An abstract of the pension shows: applied 5 Nov 1914, approved Sep 1914, age 76 years, born in Warick Co. IN, lived in Texas for 74 years, 74 in Paris, enlisted in 1863 Ryan's Co., Good's Battalion. R. P. Baker and M. J. Hafner, Lamar Co., 5 Nov 1914 deposed they knew him. M. B. Murphy, 5 Nov 1914, deposed that he served in the same company with Baker. Elizabeth Baker received a Texas Confederate Pension #33569 for service of her husband John Armstrong Baker. An abstract of the pension shows: applied 9 Dec 1916, approved 14 Dec 1916, lived in Paris, she died 17 Oct 1929, he died 19 [sic] Nov 1916, in Lamar Co., they married 14 Jul 1866 in Lamar Co., her age was 72, born in Richmond, VA, lived in Texas since 1860, and the same in Paris, did not know his regiment, referred to his Pension #29777. A. J. Richey and T. H. Chennault Lamar Co., 11 Dec 1916, deposed they knew her. The tombstone was rechecked and date of death is 21 Nov 1916.
