Notes
THE PARIS EVENING NEWS, Monday, March 5, 1934, p. 1, col. 4: "Sayers Boyd, for years identified with the newspaper business of Paris, died at 5 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Sanitarium of Paris after less than a week's illness from pneumonia, which developed following an operation necessitated by an injury to his hand. Funeral services were set for 3 o'clock Monday afternoon at the First Methodist Church, conducted by the former pastor, Rev. M. L. Hamiliton of Gainsville, assisted by Dr. C. M. Simpson, presiding elder of Paris Methodist district, and the pastor, Dr. E. V. Cole, burial being at Evergreen Cemetery. George Steely, Jesse DeShong, Morris Fleming, Claude Ferguson, Carter Anderson and Bok Kimball were named as pallbearers. Mr. Boyd is survived by his widow, formerly Miss Elizabeth Robinson, a daughter of the late Dr. D. T. Robinson of Cooper, and four children, A. P. Boyd of Fort Worth, Sayers Boyd, Jr., student at Baylor Medical School in Dallas, David Boyd of Paris and Mrs. Glenn McCullough of Missoula, Mont. He also leaves a brother and three sisters, Dr. Arthur Boyd, Mrs. Murray Easton, and Mrs. Henley Ballinger of Paris, and Mrs. Atha Thomas of Mt. Pleasant. Sayers Boyd was the youngest son of the late Austin P. and Mary Boyle Boyd. He was born in Paris, December 21, 1879. His parents had come to Paris from Mississippi in 1869 and A. P. Boyd began publishing a newspaper the next year and later became the owner of The News which he was publishing when he died in 1902. He began newspaper work when a youth, delivering the Morning News and then learning typesetting in his father's office. Before he had reached his majority he had become business manager of the paper and at the time of his father's death had entire charge of the publication. His mother sold the paper a few years later to Sayers and J. G. Marshall, and when Mr. Marshall some time afterwards sold his interest to Mr. Boyd, the-later became owner and publisher until April 2, 1920, when he sold The News to the Paris Publishing company of which the late Harry T. Warner was manager and editor. Mr. Boyd then engaged in a loan and insurance business with J. C. Hathaway, from which he retired several years ago and since then had given his attention to his real estate investments. Several months ago he began publication of The Texan, which is distributed free in Paris, and which he was directing at the time of his last illness. Early in life Sayers Boyd became a member of the Methodist Church and from that time was one of its regular attendants and supporters. He had served as superintendent of its Sunday School and for years was a member of the board of stewards and often had represented his church as a delegate to district conferences. His fraternal affiliations was with the Masonic bodies which he had served as Worshipful Master and he had advanced through the degree to the Commandery. Mr. Boyd supported with his newspaper and his purse every movement that purposed to advance Paris materially, morally and socially. He lived a clean, upright life and leaves his family the heritage of a good husband and father and a good citizen, one whose passing is regretted by all who knew him and whose loss will be felt throughout the city where he spent his allotted years."
