THE PARIS NEWS, 3 Aug 1978: 'Dan Bills, of 1745 Belmont onetime Lamar County Sheriff, Paris Police Chief, and farm reporter for the Paris News, died at 2:45 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Hospital. He was 71. Services are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Fry and Gibbs Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. James Semple will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Mr. Bills was born 2 Sep 1906, in the Reno community, son of W. R. Bills and the former Eula Kelly. He attended Reno public schools and married Miss Mattie Gray on 3 Oct 1931. They lived in Paris and Lamar County all their lives. Mr. Bills was a member of the First Baptist Church, and of the Hamp Malone Sunday School class there. He was a farm news reporter for The Paris News for about 14 years and wrote 'Ramblin' Around with Dan Bills.' In 1950, he resigned from The Paris News and started Dan Bills Furniture and Real Estate here. He was sheriff of Lamar County from 1953 to 1961. He served as the chief of police in Paris from 1961 to 1968. After that, he served as a Deputy US Marshall for three years. He continued to operate his real estate agency until the present time. He was a member of the Oddfellows Lodge, a former member of the Optimist Club, a former member of the Lamar County Chamber of Commerce, and had been a member of several local, state and national law enforcement organizations. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Glen (Sarah) Gambill of Paris and Mrs. Robert (Annelle) Harty of Dallas; five grandchildren, Kathy, Julie and Robert Harty, all of Dallas, and Danny and Gail Gambill, both of Paris; three sisters, Mrs. Florence Large of Fresno, Calif., Mrs. Louis (Stella) Almond of Dallas and Mrs. T. P. (Alline) Graham Sr. of Houston; and three brothers, Joe B. Bills of Paris, R. Bills Jr. of Bonham; and one niece, Miss Nancy Bills of the home.'

Tombstone is inscribed, 'Chief of Police-Sheriff, Lamar County.'
