Notes
THE PARIS NEWS, 15 Feb 1963. 'A young Clarksville High fullback who came to Paris Junior College to play football in 1926 and stayed on to coach and teach in Paris for nearly 35 years-Peter W. Barnett-was dead today at 56. Barnett, longtime assistant coach and faculty member at Paris High School, died in St. Joseph's Hospital here at 4:20 a.m. Friday. He had been hospitalized three weeks ago after what was described as a light heart attack. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Fry and Gibbs chapel here, with burial at Evergreen Cemetery. The Rev. Melville Nesbit of Central Presbyterian Church has charge. Know affectionately by hundreds of football players and math students as 'Mr. Pete.' Barnett had coached at Paris High since 1926. During the period from 1928 to 1954, Barnett prided himself in not missing a day of school or a football workout. He came to Paris from Clarksville in 1926 to play fullback with the Paris Junior College Dragons then coached by Hub Hollis. He graduated from PJC and then J.G. Wooten, Paris superintendent at the time, thought enough of his mathematics ability to hire him as a teacher at Paris High without a degree. Barnett later received his degree from East Texas State in the summer of 1936, and through the years had taught geometry, algebra and mathematics at Paris High. Associates said he tried to keep abreast of the times, and gave special attention on numerous occasions to the mathematics needs of boys going to Annapolis and West Point and to the entrance requirements of all colleges. He started coaching in 1928, and for a time was head coach at Paris High under the city-wide program that had Bob Berry as athletic director and Hub Hollis as Paris Junior College head coach. He had continued as an assistant through the years, and had been one of veteran Head Coach Raymond Berry staff since Berry came here in 1938. It usually fell Barnett's assignment to coach the defensive team working against the varsity and he took great pride in 'the nubs.' He was also head basketball coach for a number of years. Barnett married the former Elizabeth Lillard here in Dec, 1930. His former Paris JC coach, Hub Hollis, became his close friend. Hollis married Elleen Lillard, sister of Elizabeth. The two couples had lived at 506 North Main here since the Barnetts were married in 1930. The Barnetts had no children. Survivors include two sisters, Miss Viola Barnett and Mrs. Lewis Martin of Clarksville, and two brothers, Seth Barnett of Houston and Harvard Barnett of San Antonio. Barnett was born 28 Sep 1906, in Scurry County, He was a Methodist, a member of the Classroom Teachers Association, Carpenters' Union , the Lamar County Quail Club and was an avid hunter and fisherman.'
