THE PARIS NEWS, Fri., May 15, 1998, p. 4B: '(Picture) Deport - William 'Bill' Upchurch, 79, died Wednesday, May 13, 1998. Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at First United Methodist Church of Deport with the Rev. Chief Warden and the Rev. Glynn Renfro officiating. Burial will be in Milton Cemetery by Wood Funeral Home, Deport. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Mr. Upchurch was born April 29, 1919, in Blossom to Hershel and Ivy Corley [Upchurch?]. His mother died when he was four years old and he was reared by his stepmother, Viola Fendley. He attended Paris Junior College and worked at Lamar Creamery before going to Albuquerque, NM in 1949. While in Albuquerque, he started a successful dry cleaning business which he operated for 30 years. After retirement he returned to Milton where he lived until his death. He was a charter member of Northeast Heights Lions Club when living in New Mexico and had served in various offices within the First United Methodist Church of Deport. He married Mattylu Harvey Jan. 28, 1939, in Deport. He was a giving father and grandfather and his home was always filled with friends and loved ones who visited often. All those who knew him will miss him. Surviving are his loving wife of 59 years, Mattylu Harvey Upchurch; five children and their spouses, Billie Goheen of Arlington, Bobbie and Ed Hill of Little Rock, AR, Donald and Eva Upchurch of Albuquerque, Jim and Cynthia Upchurch of Durango, CO, and Leah and Russell Schroeder of Rogers, AR; six sisters, Katherine Green of Deport, Frances Davis of Fort Worth, Patsy Phillips of Herminston, OR, Carolyn Steiner of Springfield, OR, Rena Ledford of Herminston, OR, and Sandra Widner; four brothers, Thomas Ray Upchurch of Bisbee, AZ, H. R. Upchurch of McDougall, AR, Ralph Upchurch of Redding, CA and Jerry Upchurch of Thatcher, AZ; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family requests memorials be made to First United Methodist Church of Deport c/o Melba Ladd, P.O. Box 317, Deport, Texas 75435 or to the Milton Cemetery Fund, c/o Wood Funeral Homes, P.O. Box 236, Deport, Texas 75435.'
