THE PARIS NEWS, Monday, October 23, 1961: “Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Fry and Gibbs chapel for Mrs. J. A. [James] Bates who died at her residence in Novice at 11:50 p.m. Sunday. Elmer L’Roy will officiate with interment in Springhill Cemetery. Mrs. Bates, the former Miss Mary L. Ford, was born December 17, 1871, daughter of the late A. G. Ford and Mary (Reiding) Ford. She married J. A. Bates January 6, 1906, and he died August 22, 1944. She had lived at Novice since her marriage. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Esker Moss of Novice, two step-daughters, Mrs. Anna Queen of Mineral Wells, and Mrs. Jessie Welch of Kilgore; one grandson, Benton Moss, 395-29th NE, Paris; and two great-grandchildren; two brothers, John C. Ford of Elkhart, Kan., and Gus Ford of Pauls Valley, Okla.”
