LAMAR COUNTY ECHO, March 1979: "John Wallace Upchurch, 91, of the Pleasant Grove Nursing Home , died Thursday, March 1, 1979, in a local hospital. Funeral services were held Saturday,, March 3, at the chapel of Gene Roden's Sons, Directors of Funerals, conducted by the Rev. Glen Vickers. Burial was in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Mr. Upchurch was born August 12, 1887, in Tennessee, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Lalfalatte Upchurch. He married Essie Pearl Kirby in 1915 and she preceded him in death April 22, 1977. He was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Cchurc. Survivors include five sisters, Mrs. C. C. Phillips and Mrs. Laura Russell, both of Paris, Mrs. Parolee Short and Mrs. Ilene Bayless, both of Amarillo, and Mrs. Flossie Ballard of Deport; and four brothers, John Upchurch, Curt Upchurch, Samuel Upchurch, and Kenneth Upchurch, all of Amarillo. Pall bearers were Robert Russell, Louis Russell, Dan Scott, John Wallace Winters, Frank Allen, Bart McDowell, Leon Allen and Jack Ballard."
